Consortium

The success of the project will depend on cross-sectorial collaboration to transform a by-product from the steel industry (which otherwise would be landfilled) and use it as raw material for several end uses, reducing the carbon footprint in all the sectors involved and helping to reach the goal of circular economy and zero waste.
The consortium is comprised of 9 partners: 3 steel producers (STOMANA, CELSA and Laminés Marchands Européens), 1 technology provider (TENOVA), 2 research technology organizations (RINA-CSM and FEhS), 1 company directly involved in the construction sector (Carmeuse) and 1 association (ESTEP).

RINA-CSM stands as national reference point on the Industry 4.0  issues supported by a network of the major Italian Universities and the main public Research Centres. Currently, RINA-CSM contributes to the definition of the national development lines for I4.0 issues. The traditional presence of RINA- CSM as the Italian reference pole in European research (RFCS, Framework Programmes, H2020) results in hundreds of international collaboration agreements and contracts.

FEhS has broad experience in monitoring, testing and research of industrial by-products (mainly iron and steel slags) as well as know-how of certification of construction products. Members of this non-profit research institute include steelworks of different European countries, cement plants, processing companies and ready-mixed concrete manufacturers. FEhS has participated / coordinated several RFCS and H2020 projects about steelmaking by-product issues.

LME is a French long products steel producer, part of AFV Beltrame Group, leader on the European market of merchant bars. The plant is based in Trith-Saint-Léger, North of France. LME and Beltrame Group are engaged in the valorisation of its waste and reduction of environmental impact. In this framework, the valorisation of LF slag is one of the important issue, including reduction of impact due to preparation and handling (dust emission and water consumption). Around 15 000 tons of LF slag are produced each year by the plant.

Celsa is the largest Spanish-owned steel company and the second largest European long products producer. The multinational consists of eight large business groups with steel producers, rolling mills, processing plants, distribution companies and recycling centres.

ESTEP brings together major stakeholders in the European steel industry, comprising several steel companies, European Steel Association (EUROFER), universities and research institutions active in steel research, users of steel such as car manufacturers, and other stakeholders such as representatives from trade unions and the European Commission. The steel technology platform aims to engage in collaborative EU actions and projects on technology, addressing European challenges to create a sustainable EU steel industry. ESTEP is also facilitating the co-programmed Horizon Europe Clean Steel Partnership.

Tenova, a Techint Group company, is a globally recognized company developing innovative, reliable, and sustainable solutions in the metals and mining industries. The company works alongside client- partners to design and develop innovative technologies and services that improve their business both today and into the future, creating solutions that help mining and metals companies reduce costs, save energy, limit environmental impact and improve working conditions for their employees. Tenova has participated to several national and EU cooperative projects

Carmeuse is a leading producer of lime and limestone products used in many applications including construction where lime is used for soil treatment in civil engineering and in building applications like mortars, bricks, and concrete. An in-depth knowledge of chemical processes linked to the use of secondary carbon sources will also be necessary to ensure proper management of the industrial by-products.

STOMANA part of Sidenor Group with a history of over 70 years in the steel industry. Stomana produces a wide range of steel products. Low carbon plates for machinery, pressure vessels, shipbuilding and also automotive industries. The factory locates in Pernik (Bulgaria) with an overall annual production capacity of approximately 800kt and employ nearly 1100 people. The integrated production relies on secondary steel recycling for over 98% of its raw materials. The technologically advanced production lines lead to high value-added finished products responding to the requirements demanding applications.
